University Access Control System
The University is upgrading the access control system (ACS) to a centrally managed system. The new system will use only proximity or “prox” cards which simply have to be brought near to (i.e. in proximity to) a reader to be read, they do not have to be slid through a magnetic stripe reader as is done in many older installations. New buildings with card access requirements will have the new system specified during construction. All existing buildings with card access will have their systems replaced during the course of a multi-year retrofit project.
University of Alberta ONEcards will be used as the access control card for the new system. The ONEcard Office will be the point of contact for all card-related issues including distribution and replacement. Access-related issues will continue to be managed by the faculty access control administrators (FACA) and the central system administrator in Facilities and Operations.
How do I get ONE?
Proximity ONEcards will be issued to individuals at a cost of $15. Departments may cover this charge by submitting a spreadsheet of approved card recipients to the ONEcard office in advance. The list must include First Name, Last Name and EmplID (UofA ID number) and should be accompanied by a speedcode.
1. You will need to visit the ONEcard office with your current ONEcard in order to exchange it for a new card (there is an additional fee to replace a lost ONEcard).
- If you do not have a ONEcard, please bring government issued photo ID.
2. When you arrive, please let our staff know that you require a
proxmity ONEcard 3. A current photo (within 2 years) is required for all new ONEcards. To check your ONEcard photo you can login at
